Chapter Fifteen

Mathias had needed Lily gone for the duration of the night, and the hunting trip had been relatively uneventful. On the ride home, Val and Lily decided to hang at her place and watch some old-school horror movies. Well, old-school to Lily, meaning 1980s slasher films. Old-school to Val was cave drawings. That was a bit of an exaggeration, but Val thought it was funny when she teased him like that. She guessed she’d laugh about being old, too, if she were the one stuck in the body of a twenty-something.

To get in the mood, they loudly sang some of the eighties favorites playing on the House of Hair, their favorite radio show. The drive from home to work and back, what had always felt like a long trip, flew by with Val in the car. The man made any monotonous chore seem like an adventure. Tonight she’d had an especially good time, and they would wrap it up in perfect fashion with nacho dip and serial killers.

Laughing and reliving the night’s kill, they playfully goofed as they got out of the car. Val begged Lily to dropkick him like she did the vamp girl in the alley, but she knew he had something up his sleeve. He’d probably grab her by the feet and torture her.

Val pinned her in a headlock as they started to enter the house, and refusing to be outdone, Lily poked him in the ribs. His fighting skills rivaled his cousin’s, but a good rib poke always made him flinch. She knew the look on his face as she did it. Lily had started a war in the garage.

The poking turned to tickling, and that turned into a full-blown scrap. Val was more mobile than Mathias; his longer arms and legs lent flexibility to his fighting style and countered Lily’s usual advantage. Giving in to his whims and thinking she could finish the little pissing contest, she ran at him, positioning herself to throw her feet in the air and dropkick him in the chest. He had begged to see it, so she would deliver.

As Lily’s feet were about to hit their mark, Val sidestepped, grabbing her around the waist while she was midair. It was a good thing the austere vamp earlier hadn’t tried that move. She might need to fine-tune the wrestling maneuvers. Val slung her around to pin her to the wall of the garage, and Lily’s mind raced to find a weakness, some way to escape his hold and yet beat him. She looked down at his hands on her waist and realized he had stopped laughing. Looking up into his eyes, Val stared back at her. His joking mood had changed into something entirely different.

Lily froze. Not just her body, but also her mind. A current surged through her and time had stopped. The pressure in Val’s hands pinning her was gone. He was only loosely holding her sides, but she didn’t move. His head leaned over hers, inches from her face.
